Five Steps for a Perfect Test Drive

February 8th, 2017 by

In the market for a new car? Make sure you’re well prepared before stepping foot in the dealership. A little research can go a long way and provide you with a stress-free buying experience. Check out our recommendations to narrow down your vehicle choices and what to do before and during a test drive.

Do your online research. With so much information at your fingertips, take the time to research the vehicles you are interested in. Take into consideration your budget and how you will be financing the car. Stick to your maximum budget; it’s easy to get swept away with new car smell! When researching price, be sure to include any dealer incentives and offers. Research the aspects that are important to you like safety features, warranty, fuel efficiency, size and any other features that are a must-have. Doing your research beforehand can save you both time and money.

Visit the Dealership. Once your research is done, and you have narrowed down your choices, the next step is seeing the vehicle in person. When looking for the vehicle, keep in mind that most cars come in many different trim levels that can significantly change the price. Only look at the trim level that is on your budget. Decide if the vehicle is a good fit for you and your family, is there sufficient room everyone and is it easy to get in and out of? How does it accommodate you as a driver, are the seats adjustable and comfortable, are there any blind spots, and can you reach the pedals? After careful consideration, decide whether to proceed with a test drive or cross the vehicle off your list.

Take a test drive. Now that you’ve narrowed your choices down to a few top contenders, it’s time to take the car for a spin. To get a true feel, take a test drive on roads similar to your daily commute. Many dealerships have a route they follow for test drives but don’t be afraid to ask to go on other roads and highways. Also, consider test driving in all different conditions like daytime, night time and rainy weather which may affect how comfortable you are in the car. Some dealerships even offer overnight test drives!

Play with the features and technology. How the car looks and feels is important but what most of us love is the available features. Play with the features to see if they meet your expectations. Crank up the radio, set the climate control, open and close the sunroof, it is essential that you test as many of the features as possible especially the ones that are most important to you.

Preowned vehicle information. It is important to examine the vehicle history report if you are considering a used car. A vehicle history report can give you an inside look at the vehicle’s past and can confirm a clear title, the odometer reading and any accidents the vehicle was in. Has the car inspected before purchase to avoid any unforeseen expenses and make sure the vehicle meets all the safety standards?
